To Masahiro's surprise, their departure date was subject to delay after delay. In the morning, Masahiro was dutifully packing away his things in preparation for the long journey when a solemn Narachika appeared at his door.
"I'm sorry to say that the reports and paperwork regarding the incident are not yet complete, please be prepared to head out the day after tomorrow, or possibly the day after that."
"..........................................eh?! "
Thinking back, Masahiro had realized that Narachika had always hated paperwork like this, and his lack of enthusiasm often leading to prolonged delays for which he was frequently reprimanded.

The cool night air seemed to calm her troubled thoughts, after a moment, Akiko sighed. Seimei's words had reassured her a little. The nagging thought persisted at the back of her mind. Was she just seeking any excuse to shed her burden of guilt?
Seimei quietly observed her expression and smiled at her as she turned to look at him.
"Don't worry, my child. I've just received an order from the palace to pray for Shouko's recovery. I'll do everything in my power to help her regain her health. "
"Really?" Akiko looked up, eyes distant.
Seimei nodded sincerely, and then looked over meaningfully at Tenitsu. She acknowledged with a nod and stood,

Presently, the steps grew closer and an old man, clad in simple, but fine silken robes appeared before them.
He smiled as he saw them, a bitter troubled smile.
"Ah..I was wondering about all the noise, so it's you guys, I see. "
At the arrival of the master of the manor, the small spirits ceased their clamoring and each stood politely at the wall, greeting Seimei with puffed out chests and refined posturing.
"Hello Lord Seimei! "
"You look as young as ever!"
"You should come visit us something."
Seimei signed at the gathered spirits before taking a seat next to Akiko.
"Lady Akiko, you look a bit pale, what have they said to you?"

The Abe house had been empty to begin with, and now its abject isolation washed over Akiko like never before. In her own home, in the hose of Fujiwara, there were occasionally days where she seldom saw anyone but her own servants. Even though the family members lived in different courtyards, she didn't feel isolated or lonely there. But the house of Abe was different... she had never felt so surrounded by the warmth of others.
Everyday, she saw Masahiro off to the bureau, she helped out around the house here and there, and picked up a few new skills in the process. With Seimei's seemingly endless stories, time went by even more quickly, and

Chapter II: The lingering isolation.
The arrival of spring brought cool ocean winds that rippled across the the waves.
"Good bye big brother !! " Mizu waved vigiorously as he and Musoru watched their departure. It was not until the young boys had become mere shapes in the distance that Masahiro finally turned his head to focus on the path ahead.
"So we're going...?"
"Yes, we'll set out tomorrow or the day after. "
"Did you tell the children ?" Taiin asked as she materialized beside Masahiro.
"Ah, yes.... I told them yesterday. They were sad, but I told them that we had family waiting, so there was no arguing it."
He turned to the small

The letter that Narachika had sent home ended with a line that had left Masachika in shock for days. "Masahiro has lost his eyes..."
What on earth could have happened ?!
Losing one's eyes.... Masachika couldn't imagine.... it was worse than losing any other kind of spirit ability they possessed.
Without eyes, what was left was a useless power, strength without focus, sharp and ready, but unable to be wielded. In short, a tragedy.
The heir to Abe no Seimei ... the little brother that had grown up under his care.
Narachika and himself were also members of the Abe family. They were both strong

Part 1
"Ah..... Im finally done writing.......but...."
Seated at his writing table, Fujiwara no Toshitsugu looked up from his scroll, brush in hand. Despite his hard work, the small mountain of scrolls stacked at the end of his table did not seem to grow smaller. He sighed and rubbed his already sore shoulder, muttering under his breath.
"Sigh... one missing apprentice... days of extra work."
Under his apprenticeship, Abe no Masahiro entered the Bureau of Onmyō last summer. Before then, paper work had been handled evenly by those at the bureau. Usually, whoever notice paperwork piling up handled it.
Author's Note
To write book nine, I went to to Doukon district to do research. My objective was to better grasp the mood and setting of the countryside. I was greatly inspired by the setting, and tried to convey the mystery and beauty of the place in this book. When I arrived in the area, the local train station did not have directions and I asked a staff member at the station about the location of the shrine and temple. He was very detailed with his instructions. A brochure I had obtained from a travel agency tour guide had said that the shrine would be five minutes away by train, but the temple would require a walk of 30 mins or more. It

In the darkness, Mokkun's crimson eyes glinted with sharp light as he gazed upon Masahiro's sleeping form. The boy had fallen into an exhausted slumber hours ago, his bruised pale face stripped of the tempered edge of determination that he held in battle, looking as every bit his young age.
Mokkun.... why did you choose to take the form of a mononoke? (Trans-note: The word he uses for "mononoke" here can also mean "monster".)
Masahiro had posed this question to him shortly after their first meeting. Before the rampaging demon, Guren had taken his true form amidst a furious flames. But he had chosen to return to his beast form, a

Gou Ookami shook himself and took and unsteady step forward on useless paws. His long black fur was gone. In its place, charred skin peeled away in strips, revealing raw red flesh. The illusion he had cast at the last minute had sapped away all his strength, but he had managed to escaped with his life. Somehow.
Once out of the fray he had run hell for leather for the opposite shore, with nary a stray glance at the catastrophe behind him.
Now, miles away on a distant shore, his steps slowed as he sighed in relief.
His wounds were grievous, but with time, care, and nurturing, he would heal. At least he was alive.
All he had to do was to fin
